Many years ago, a young boy was grazing his father’s sheep in a very remote part of Tamil Nadu. He was from a downtrodden community, and their family was constantly exploited and abused by the so-called high castes. However, all the exploitation and abuse could not crush the spirit of this young boy. As he sat under the shade grazing sheep, a Christian Missionary couple happened to be passing that way. They noticed this young boy and wanted to give him some candies. However, when they asked if the boy wanted candies, he refused and said, “ I do not want any candies, but I would like to have an education.” The missionaries were surprised at what they heard. The missionaries noticed he had a little paper in his hand, and he was trying to read it, and since he did not know how, he was holding the book upside down. The missionaries were surprised. They knew the dynamics of the area very well because they worked among the downtrodden for many years, and because of that they knew that education was out of the reach of this young boy, being from a low caste, he was not entitled to an education, The young boy’s family was often mistreated and discriminated due to the their caste. Therefore, they knew that this boy asking for an education was a bold step forward. So the missionary couple took the boy to his father’s house and asked him if they could take him away to give him an education. This young boy went on to study. He excelled. He finished his Masters Degree, He went to Bible college and finished his Theology. He served on many boards of leading organizations in various capacities, He pastored many churches, he had travelled over 18 countries, he was presented an honorary doctorate by a reputed university for his years of dedicated service to humanity. This young boy was none other than our founder Dr. D. K. Paul Raj. He knew the true value of education. The seed of education that the missionary couple Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair from Canada had sown into him and created a huge impact. He went on to start Sinclairs High School named after this wonderful couple who had given him an education, which now educates 1000’s of others. Well that is the power of education.
